Tarah Corral’s son began preschool just before his second birthday, still struggling with speech issues.
“He barely even said, ‘Momma,’” Corral said.
A conversation with another parent led her to De Colores Learning Center & Childcare, where she quickly learned about Pima Early Education Program scholarships (PEEPs). The scholarship opened the door to full-time, high-quality early education for her son, Benji, who is now a thriving 4-year-old.
On a recent morning at De Colores, Benji sat at a child-sized table with his mother, intently focused on building a structure with magnetic tiles. Corral became emotional talking about how PEEPs and the education and social interaction of preschool have transformed her son.
“Within the first month or two, it was a dramatic increase. Instead of playing our game, where he would point at things, he would actually say, ‘I want cereal,’ or ‘I want so and so,’” she said.
“To be able to see him go from nonverbal to verbal, that's amazing. It's absolutely emotional. He’s become a social butterfly being here.”
This is why Pima County believes in investing in early childhood education.
